The WOW retreat starts with health screenings. WOW believes everyone’s healthy lifestyle journey is unique, with everyone starting from a different place. The health screenings allow participants to know where they are at that moment. Health Care Screenings are offered between 7:30 AM – 9:15 AM.

Screenings offered are as follow:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Glucose
  • BMI
  • Height
  • Weight

We will offer additional screenings as available in a community

The WVU National Center of Excellence in Women’s health provides cholestec machines for Cholesterol and Glucose screens, scales, and waist measure tape. We ask our health care providers/students to provide their own blood pressure equipment. A separate area is set aside for screenings with an effort to provide some privacy. Following the screening, participants are given the opportunity to talk with a health care provider about their screening results.

Participants are provided with a document that collects/records very basic demographic information, screening results and any appropriate comments. Specific instructions as to how to complete the form will be provided at the event. The screening document provides two functions, 1. the document provides the participant with their test results to share with their health care provider, 2. The WVU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health has an approved IRB to collect the information on the document and study the results.

Responsibilities of health screening volunteers:

    • Explain why the screen is important

    • Explain result to participant
    • Answer any questions
    • Ask participant if they have a health care provider
    • Remind them to give their test results to their provider

The WVU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (CoE) believes that efforts to improve the health and well-being of the residents of our state must be far reaching and all inclusive. West Virginia ranks 47th in the nation in overall health statistics, with West Virginia women ranking 44th in the nation in poverty and 43rd in High School completion. Moreover, the life expectancy of women in this state is lower than the life expectancy rate of all women in the U.S.

The CoE’s mission is to improve the well-being of all women across the lifespan through education, research, clinical care, community partnerships and the promotion of leadership by women.
In the words of Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General:
“When women are fully involved, the benefits can be seen immediately: families are healthier, they are better fed, and their income, savings and reinvestments go up. And what is true of families is true of communities and eventually, whole countries.”

Student Opportunities:
• Internships
• Civic Engagement
• Volunteer
